World Congratulates the New Prime Minister of Thailand
On August 22, 2023, Srettha Thavisinm, leader of the Pheu Thai Party, was elected to be the 30th prime minister of Thailand, effectively ending the months of uncertainty that followed the general election in May. Originally Pita Limjaroenrat, leader of the Move Forward Party, was expected to become the new prime minister after his party won the most votes, however, this did not become a reality after he was unable to secure the same level of support from senators. After a joint sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate on Tuesday 22, 2023, Srettha received a majority vote and has since been appointed prime minister by His Majesty the King.
Srettha frequently shares his views on social media where he has spoken in support of LGBTQ rights and expressed his desires to improve the economy, reduce inequality, reduce poverty, and stated his goal is “a better livelihood for all Thai people”. The United States, the European Union and Singapore have all congratulated the new prime minister and announced they look forward to working with the Thai government in the future.
