MSU Researchers discovered a new insect species in the world “Culicoides mahasarakhamense”

Prof. Dr. Pairot Pramual, Researcher from Department of Biology, Faculty of Science Mahasarakham University and team discovered a new insect species in the world “Culicoides mahasarakhamense Pramual, Jomkumsing, Piraonapicha, Jumpato, 2021” for the first time at Ban Wai, Na Si Nuan Subdistrict, Kantharawichai District Maha Sarakham Province. Moreover, there is also found in Kalasin, Roi Et and Sisaket as well.

This research is part of a research project on the insect vector diversity and its relationship with the pathogen of Leucocytozoonosis in poultry in Thailand. It was funded by Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI) and Mahasarakham University. The objective of this research was to study the diversity of insect carriers of Leucocytozoonosis in poultry in Thailand, which is caused by Leucocytozoon with blood-sucking insects in the family Simuliidae and insects in the genus Culicoides or gnats in the family Ceratopogonidae.

Due to in Thailand still lack of the knowledge of the taxonomic and biodiversity of the genus Culicoides. Therefore, further studies are needed, especially on issues related to the epidemiology of diseases carried by these insects. This will help to prevent or eliminate the disease in economically important pets in the future. That's why the researchers are interested studying in the diversity of these insects.
