MSU researcher finds new genus of Cylindrical Millipede over 10 species

Asst. Prof. Dr. Piyatida Pimvichai; researcher of Faculty of Science, Mahasarakham University found new genus of Cylindrical Millipedes, which is Coxobolellus Pimvichai, Enghoff, Panha & Backeljau 2020, including 10 new species. The article was published in Invertebrate Systematics journal on August 14, 2020.

The new genus of Cylindrical Millipede over 10 species includes C. albiceps, C. compactogonus, C. fuscus, C. nodosus, C. serratus, C. simplex, C. tenebris, C. tigris, C. transversalis and C. valvatus. The Coxobolellus was named from unique characteristics of the 1st segment or Coxa. They had uniqueness of each Morphological characteristics and DNA barcodes. In addition, the researcher was studied the evolutionary relationship of this new genus by using bio molecular data.

The discovery and study of this new genus is very interesting, because in some species has variation of morphological in polymorphism. Therefore, the Cylindrical Millipede is considered an important model that can apply in the education of taxonomy and evolution.
