MSU Vermiculture Bio-Organic Fertilizer in NEWS Channel 5
MSU Vice President for General Management, Mrs. Areerat Raksasilp reported the production of MSU Vermiculture Bio-Organic Fertilizer to the NEWS Team of TV 5, Royal Thai Army Radio and Television Channel 5 on March 11, 2015 at MSU Waste Management Building.
Focusing on the beneficial waste reduction of almost 50, 000 students producing about 8 tons of waste per day, Mrs. Areerat Raksasilp revealed the concept behind the Vermiculture Bio-Organic Fertilizer. And the production started after the segregation of the collected waste into BIODEGRADABLE and NON-BIODEGRADABLE.
According to the MSU Vice President for General Management, the Bio-Degradable waste collected such as fruit peels and vegetable leftovers are being brought into Vermiculture, a worm management. This is the process of using red worms to decompose organic food waste, converting waste into a nutrient-rich fertilizer capable of supplying necessary nutrients to the soil to help sustain plant growth.
In vermicompost, the worm bin is being watered and followed by the fermented wine from green vegetables to help the microbes to decompose the compost more quickly. Due to the heat generated from the fermented wine, the decomposition will take only for 2-3 days from 7-10 days. Then the beddings arrangement of the waste in the worm bin will follow about three-quarters of the bin. On top of it, a couple handful of soil will be sprinkled to introduce beneficial microorganisms and aid the worms’ to digestive processes. Fluffing the bedding about once in a while help the worms to get enough air and freedom of movement. And finally the Vermiculture Bio-Organic Fertilizer, the worm castings soil-like material that has moved through the worms ‘ digestive tracts can be collected and used to boost plant growth .
Moreover, Mrs. Areerat Raksasilp revealed to NEWS Team TV 5 that this projects got a great factor of the Rank 3 in Thailand and Rank 74 in the world of Mahasarakham University in UI GreenMetric World University Ranking in 2014.
