Endeavour Fellow from Mahasarakham University boosts Traditional Medicinal Plant research
The appointment of an Endeavour Fellowship Awardee in the Center of Medicinal Chemistry (CMC) at the University of Wollongong, Dr. Prapairat Seephonkai of Mahasarakham University boosts the traditional medicinal plant research. Along with the six PhD students and four academic staff, they are working on research projects concerned with traditional medicinal plants from Bhutan, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Dr. Prapairat Seephonkai is investigating the natural products derived from a Thai traditional medicinal plant which is known for its anti-cancer properties. Her research projects involves a study of the roots of the Thai traditional medicinal plant, Strophioblachia Fimbricalyx.
She has been able to isolate several novel natural products from this plant by careful chromatographic separation and structure elucidation by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. And some of these showsselective cyctotoxicity against human small lung, epidermoid carcinoma and breast cancer cell lines.
