Walai Rukhavej Botanical Research Institute


 

   
  The purpose of the center is to conserve and expand varieties of indigenous plants in the northeastern region. It was established in 1986 as the Botanical Garden and Center of Information on Isan Plants and given its present name in 1993. The institute provides support for classroom and research activities and also disseminates information and technology to faculties, students and the general public.
   
  The main functions of the institute are many. First, it aims to stress the fundamental and applied research in science and technology integrated with local wisdom to promote rural development. Second, the institute has a responsibility to conserve, promote and exploit biodiversity in the Greater Mekong Sub-region for social development and to upgrade local people’s quality of life. Third, the institute focuses its research on setting up a database of biological resources and local wisdom so as to create sustainable community development and a network between public and private sectors. Finally, the institute emphasizes publication of biotechnology for conservation and exploitation of native plants and products derived from local materials. The Institute comprises two operating sites, Kerng and Nadoon stations.
